  • INT6010 Terrorism and Counterterrorism (10 sp)

    Why do some people commit terrorist acts? What is a terrorist? Is one man’s freedom fighter another man’s terrorist? What is terrorism, really? This class examines these fundamental questions and many more in order to gain some insight into one of the most talked about political phenomenon of our time. The class is taught by Dr. Hilde Restad, and has been developed in collaboration with Dr. Anders Romarheim at the Institute of Defence Studies (IFS).

  • INT6020 International Political Economy in War and Peace (10 sp)

    Susan Strange ga i 1970 ut artikkelen ‘International Economics and International Relations: A Case of Mutual Neglect’. Hovedargumentet var at både statsvitere og økonomer har mye å lære av hverandre. Internasjonal politisk økonomi (IPØ) er en faglig tilnærming som har som formål å kombinere nettopp disse to tradisjonelt separate fagtradisjonene. IPØ ser på økonomisk aktivitet og økonomiske systemer i lys av, og med hjelp av modeller og metoder som tradisjonelle økonomer ikke anvender. Videre tar IPØ utgangspunkt i at politisk og økonomisk makt utvikler seg i tandem og har gjensidig påvirkning.

  • INT6030 Global Governance (10 sp)

    The current global economic instability has, together with the rise of states such as India and China, spurred much interest in global governance. Yet, the concept is relatively poorly understood. In this course, we examine the significance, impact and nature of the marked increase in international organisation since the second half of the twentieth century. We also ask how such organisation today meets, of fails to meet, the challenges presented by the global economic crisis and climate change.

  • INT6040 Foreign Policy Analysis (10 sp)

    In this course we examine the various theories of foreign policy and how foreign policy is made, focussing in particular on states. The intention is to provide students with an insight into the decision making process, including how policy instruments are chosen, the role of leadership in the process, the importance of history and identity in framing the foreign policy goals of a country, and the relevance of such factors as biases, perceptions, psychology and interests (bureaucracies) in shaping the agenda.

  • INT6050 Africa Then and Now (10 sp)

    Africa tends to be associated with poverty, conflict and dictatorship. Is this a valid picture of a continent of 54 different countries and more than a billion people? In this course we look for answers to why Africa both has some of the world’s poorest countries and some of the fastest growing economies, as well as reasons why more and more African countries move towards multiparty democratic systems of governance.

    The Arctic is experiencing fast and unprecedented economic, environmental, political, and security challenges, which provides new opportunities for international cooperation, but also a potential for regional competition and even conflict. For example, the reduction of the Arctic ice cap is now exceeding earlier climatic model predictions.

    What role did Great Britain play in “creating” Israel? Why can’t Israel and Palestine make peace? Why does Iran resent the United States? How did the Cold War affect geopolitics in the Middle East? Why did the Arab Spring fail? What role is Russia playing in Syria today? In this class, we survey great power politics in the Middle East from the First World War to today in order to better understand this complex region.

  • INT6080 The Ethics of War and Peace (10 sp)

    The last 100 years have seen brutal wars, murderous totalitarian regimes, genocide, and nuclear weapons. But we have also witnessed – to a certain extent because of the facts just mentioned – an unprecedented development of international law, a great resurgence of interest in international ethics and the ethics of war, humanitarian initiatives on a large scale, and the founding of international organizations such as the United Nations, designed to foster peace and international cooperation.
