Bjørnar Østby is a lecturer in International Studies and Peace and Conflict Studies at Bjørknes University College. His academic background is within Conflict Studies, and he graduated with a master’s degree from the London School of Economics (LSE) in 2017. HE is also an alumni from Bjørknes, holding a BA in Peace and Conflict Studies.
Over the course of his studies, Bjørnar has primarily focused on civil conflicts in Central- and West Africa, but with a keen interest in actors like the Islamic State as well. In terms of research areas, Bjørnar has a special interest in matters related to the often complex and counterintuitive distribution of authority and power between states and non-state actors in civil conflict.
Coming from a family with ties to Ethiopia spanning several generations, he has considerable experience from the country, and also leads study trips to Tanzania. Bjørnar has extensive experience in administrating and developing online courses at Bjørknes University College, and has taught courses on subjects such as Human Rights, and Religion and Conflict.
