The Holocaust and the Nakba

Few historical associations are as sensitive as the Genocide of the Jewish People and the Palestinian Catastrophe of 1948—the Holocaust and the Nakba. Both are at the heart of the ongoing Israeli and Palestinian conflict, and the connection between them is typically seen as taboo and heretical.

History and memory

In The Holocaust and the Nakba: A New Grammar of Trauma and History (Columbia University Press, 2018), leading Arab and Jewish intellectuals challenge the taboo to examine how and why the Holocaust and the Nakba are interlinked. The book does not seek to draw a parallel or comparison between the Holocaust and Nakba, nor does it merely inaugurate a “dialogue” between them. Instead, it searches for a new historical and political grammar to narrate the points where they meet. The effort involves history, as much it involves memory. It is about the past, and the different ways in which the past is and ought to be remembered.
