ØKAD6010 The Nordic Model (15 sp)

In this course, you will learn what distinguishes the social models that have evolved in the Nordic countries since World War 2 from other types of welfare states in the Western world, gain insight into the foundation for, and better understand the central goals of this model.

The Nordic countries cluster at the top of rankings of everything from economic competitiveness to happiness and social health. They are characterized by less economic inequality, and were less affected by the financial turmoil in the wake of the 2007/8 financial crisis than the rest of Europe. In this course, we examine variants of the Nordic model in detail, with a particular attention to the Norwegian variant. The student will learn what distinguishes the social models that have evolved in the Nordic countries since World War 2 from other types of welfare states in the Western world, gain insight into the foundation for, and better understand the central goals of this model.

After completing this course, you are expected to have acquired the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge

  • has knowledge about the existing research on the Nordic Model in general, and the Norwegian Model in particular
  • can update her/his knowledge on the subject
  • has an understanding of the central research questions, processes and methods, and can make use of analytical tools from both economics, psychology and political science to understand the Nordic Model

Skills

  • can discuss how the Nordic Models combine elements of capitalism and socialism
  • can critically assess the importance of risk-sharing as a component in the Nordic Model
  • can present important features of the Nordic Model in general, and the Norwegian variant hereof in particular
  • is able to communicate central topics and theories within research on the Nordic Model
  • masters relevant analytical tools and can express herself/himself on matters pertaining to the Nordic Model
  • can assess the link between the welfare state and topics such as education, health services, childcare, equality and employment

Competence

  • understands how problem-solving, processes and decision-making affects and is affected by resources, context and values
  • can exchange viewpoints and exchange knowledge with others, so as to contribute to the establishment of best practice

Requirement

The requirement must be passed in accordance to given deadline in order to register for the exams.

Exam

This course consists of a 4 hour written exam that constitute the final grade, grading system A-F.
